When you’re 67, you work harder to not come across as a digital dinosaur. A few posts ago, I wrote about writers and social media. Since that post, I have discovered Substack, which is made for writers and the writing life. And I started my own, called “MFA and Beyond,” in which I write about my experiences with Drexel’s low-residency MFA program and what will happen afterward. My Substack is free to subscribers, and I think I have six subscribers including me. But it’s all about building that platform, so you have to start somewhere. The only Substack subscription I am paying for at the moment is Courtney Maum’s “Before and After the Book Deal.”
It’s relatively easy to build a professional-looking presence on Substack (much easier than building a website or starting a blog), and here are some resources for writers. Blogging is old school, and I don’t consider these brief posts blogs – just stream-of-consciousness tidbits. I still have a blog out there somewhere, but I haven’t posted in months.
My goal is to post to Substack every Monday, and I have about twenty potential topics lined up. I am not suggesting you drop everything to start your own Substack, just poke around on the platform a bit. There are many resources for writers.
